For some reason the phrase “The Incredible Lightness of Being” has been on my mind the last several days. I think there is a book, maybe a movie too, by that name. I haven’t read or seen them nor do I know what they are about. (Postscript: The name of the book is actually “The Unbearable Lightness of Being”.  As with most books and movies, this book/movie is apparently a deeply tangled story of broken relationships, extramarital affairs, and deep seated psycological problems.  Those things don’t seem to me like something described by the subject phrase.   As such they have nothing to do with The Quiet Way or probably with the other blog described below either.   But the phrase I was thinking about does…  It is interesting (and encouraging) to note that this post gets several hits a day using the word “Incredible” as opposed to “Unbearable” as in the name of the book/movie.  I wonder if, like me, people have heard the phrase but have subconsciously sbstituted the positive term for the more negative one.  Comments would be welcome…)

The reason for my interest in the phrase is personal  but it seems to describe The Quiet Way very well. I Googled it…

A WordPress blog caught my eye. I clicked on it. Here is where it took me.

It read like a more emotional version of The Quiet Way. I read some more. It was written by a woman from Australia named Kim; It follows many of the same themes as The Quiet Way but differs in many ways too. I read the About page. She makes reference to backyard philosophy and physics(although, I suspect, metaphorically)…like me.  She is a woman, a writer of children’s books and she has cancer…not like me.

Then I notice the Archives…the last entry is in October 2007 written by her son. She died on May 19, 2007.

Blogging means different things to different people. I started reading two or three blogs to help give me a broader perspective on life when the company I worked for was in the process of going out of existence. The writers, Dave Beckerman, Bill Emory, and another guy I no longer follow,  were photographers…I could relate to them in some way even though their lives were much different than mine. Their blogs got me interested in starting a blog of my own…maybe someone will run across it and find something they can relate to or at least find a brief escape from some cubicle somewhere. Maybe I can share “The Incredible Lightness of Being” that I frequently experience relating to the world around me.

Like Kim did for a very short time…

June 5, 2009

Last evening we loaded our bikes into the truck to go to the Trail for a ride. My wife got into the passenger side and I got into the driver’s seat. I was just ready to start the engine when she said, “Wait, we have a visitor.”

I looked up to see a tiny bird perched on the passenger side windshield wiper. I took a few photographs and then one of the parents showed up on the radio antenna. They were Phoebes. We have a lot of them around this year. This duo was probably from the nesting platform under the eave of the garden shed roof.

We enjoy having Phoebes around the house even if they are a little dirty. We have two or three nests this year. They mow with me in the lower pastures and around the pond and are great fun to watch as they chase bugs.

Earlier in the afternoon two fledgling Bluebirds rested on the deck railing. We are expecting to see some little wrens before too long from the nest under the eave of the screened in porch.
